Transitions

What, How, Why, Examples!

Transitions are simply the partial manoeuvres that join two different manoeuvres together. So you have:

  • Start Manoeuvre
  • Transition Manoeuvre
  • End Manoeuvre

To get them right, you need to be very good at the start manoeuvre. You need to have enough mental availability to be thinking about where your exit is while you’re flying the start manoeuvre so that you end up in the right place.

You also need to be very good at the transition, whichever one you choose. It doesn’t have to be 3D, but can be as simple as a quarter roll from one upright funnel to another. You normally need to tweak this one a bit to end up in exactly the right position to make the next part smooth.

And finally you need to be very good at the destination manoeuvre. The transition should put you in the perfect position to continue with this last part, so you need to able to settle into it without any wobbles, bobbles or height gain/loss.

Piroflips are generally the most used transitions, as the pilot can decide to exit in forwards, backwards or sideways flight.
